This is a shout out to all of the shorties out there! Finally, a celebration and ode to the vertically challenged – Becky Murphy’s new book “I’d Rather be Short” shares the overlooked advantages of a small stature.
Ahem–I’m actually of average height (and probably average in every sense of the word), but I thought of the perfect person to review this book for y’all. My cousin, Monica Castro. She’s older than me and I’ve been taller than her for most of our lives. She’s probably endured just about every short joke there is…maaaaybe even a few from me.
Before I get to the book, I wanted to share a little bit about her career – an area in which she has not fallen short (lol, I know).
A proud graduate of Kansas State University, Monica launched right into a career in journalism starting as a reporter in Topeka, Kansas. In 2012 she moved to Bryan to become a reporter for the local NBC affiliate –
KAGS. I recently learned that Tamron Hall began her career in Bryan, TX, so now I’m convinced I’ll see Monica on the TODAY show and MSNBC soon.
Monica has a passion for bringing important stories to light, especially those that honor heroes of her community. Small girl with a big heart, take a look at a couple of her stories, like this one honoring the community’s firefighters or this one sharing a wounded soldier’s positive story.
Here’s a picture of Monica in the field. I find it simultaneously hilarious and charming that they need to carry around a box for her to stand on so she’ll be tall enough for the shots:
Despite the challenges, she certainly isn’t letting anything stop her from reaching the heights of her career. If you live in Bryan, tune into channel 6…if not, you’ll just have to wait for a national news outlet to snatch her up.
Back to the book, I’d Rather Be Short. Here’s what Monica has to say:
“As a 4’11 gal this book really spoke to me! I’d Rather Be Short is a fun book to share with your tall friends to give them some insight on what it’s like to be petite. It’s witty and I love the drawings. I can honestly say that I laughed at most of the examples because they were really spot on. I truly believe what they say, “short people have many of advantages. I embrace my shortness.”
Finally you can turn that ongoing joke into a great gift for all the shorties in your life.
All I have left to say is…
Shawty like a melody in my head
That I can’t keep out
Got me singin’ like
Na-na-na-na everday
Like my iPod stuck on replay, replay….
OMG I love this. Thank you so much for featuring my book! I’m going to send this to my mom right now.
