Want a Job? Make a Personal Connection

I receive a lot of e-mails from people looking for a job. They have gone through all the motions: interned at the best places, created a rock star resume, written a baller cover letter. However, they are almost always missing one important component: making personal connections!

I hate to break it to you, but Tweeting at someone is not an in-depth conversation. If you are currently looking for a job, will be searching for a job in the future or trying to advance yourself in your career, learn how to have a real conversation with people.

If you want to

Career Confidential: Claire Hardee

1069901_611942855203_1951296055_nThis week’s Career Confidential is a good one from our very own contributor, Claire Hardee (Not Another Suzy Homemaker aka NASH). Ok, I know you are probably wondering where her columns are, but she is in the process of moving, so stay tuned. Even I am excited to see what she has cookin’ up because Lord knows that I could learn a few tips/tricks in the kitchen.

While Claire definitely doesn’t have your typical 9-to-5 job, I wanted

What I Wore: White Pants

White pants: the single most controversial item in the fashion world. Why are there so many rules surrounding white pants? We have heard them all: no white after Labor Day, only tooth picks can wear white bottoms, etc. Who makes up these ridiculous rules? The fake fashion police?

Anyways, I love my white jeans, they are a constant staple in my wardrobe. They provide an effortless summer outfit, paired with a slouchy tank and fun sandals. I know, I am such a rule break (cue Ashlee Simpson song), but I also love my white jeans in the Fall/Winter with combat

PSA: Stop Waiting Till you are Skinny to Live Your Life

The other day I was having a conversation with an acquaintance of mine, and she kept telling me about all the things she was going to do when she lost weight. I left the conversation feeling annoyed and angry because she was willing to pause her whole life for something so superficial. But mostly, I was sad that she couldn’t see that she was already fabulous.

I honestly hate talking about weigh because it should be a non-issue. Who cares? Really.

However, this conversation just really left me thinking about all the similar conversations I have had. If I had

Next up on Career Confidential, another awesome lady: Brandy Shea!

I have had the honor of working with Brandy professionally, which is always a treat because she is one of the most creative people I know. On top of that, she is also one of my closest friends.

Impending Doom

I am not sure what it is. Maybe it is because it is Monday, and I always feel a little bit off on Mondays, but I woke up with an impending sense of doom that my 26th birthday is in a month. 26 is old!! Last week, I went to my routine dermatology appointment, and I found myself almost asking about Botox. Whoa slow the breaks; I want to still be able to show emotion!!

For some reason, 26 sounds very adult, and currently, I don’t live a very adult life. My life mirrors that of a college frat boy.

Career Q&A: What Do I Look for in an Intern?

Let me preface this post by saying, bear with me: this video is not going to win an Oscar for cinematography anytime soon.

Sometimes in life, you just have to tell your inner perfectionist to “shut the hell up”. Mostly, I wish there was a way I could get rid of the dark circles under my eyes! However, since this blog is all about being real, this is REALISTICALLY what I look like on a Friday afternoon after a long week.

I am so technologically incompetent: it took me the entire day to figure out iMovie and embed

What I Wore: Skirts!

When I first started thinking about creating a blog, I had a hard time deciding what to focus on. Initially, NeonNotebook was only going to be a career blog. Then, I decided NO WAY; that is no fun. So, we introduced the other sections: fashion, lifestyle and pop culture.

Not to sound ridiculous, but I love fashion, so it seemed unnatural to leave that out of my blog. One of my favorite ways to destress after a long week is to spend Saturday afternoon bouncing around the local thrift stores. I am not talking about vintage

What I Wear To Work…

I recently had to take aMallorie1 business management class in college–not by choice of course. When my professor started a lecture titled “interviewing”, I was really curious to see what tips she would give us.

Let’s just say it was nothing like what I expected. When discussing what should be worn to interviews, she suggested that women should be wearing suits and close-toed kitten heels (GASP!). Oh and heaven forbid that we forget those horrendous panty hose.

News flash: it’s the 21st century and nobody dresses that way for
