Position / Job title?: Account Manager at Jobs2Careers 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but I feel like I always thought I wanted to do something “different.” I was in choir from a young age, and thought that I might do something with that. As I got older, I realized that wasn’t really possible, and I So, I just got approval from my editor at Entrepreneur.com to do a series on branding. Being the nerd I am, I am completely stoked to look at how some of the coolest companies successfully use a myriad of tools to establish a cohesive brand. The companies I am going to cover don’t just have customers: they have fans. As I started to plan out my first column, it got me thinking about the importance of personal branding. Even if you aren’t aiming to an entrepreneur, it is important to create a personal brand that helps you stand out professionally. I am not going to lie I had pretty low expectations for my birthday this weekend. The past year has been so crazy busy that the big day just kinda crept up on me. Birthdays are kinda like New Years; you build everything up, and it just becomes a disappointment. I have to tell you though, despite my best efforts to be a debbie downer, my birthday kicked ass thanks to the amazing people in my life. Position / Job title?: Account Executive at INK Public Relations 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I’ve always loved writing and wanted to write stories when I grew up. I loved fiction and was obsessed with Star Wars as a child, so I thought becoming the next George Lucas would be the end-all, be-all. Then, in high school, after Hurricane Katrina hit, When you are not in school anymore, and the year isn’t broken up by summer vacation, winter break, etc., time just meshes together. I am so out of the loop that I didn’t even realize school was back in session until I had a “oh shit” moment as I sped through a school zone this morning. I definitely don’t miss doing homework and taking tests, but I totally miss the excitement of starting a new year. I am sad that I no longer have a reason to buy school supplies and pick out a first day outfit! For all the Wednesdays used to be such a drag. You are excited that you survived the first half of the week, yet Friday still seems so far. However, now that the new season of Duck Dynasty is back, Wednesday just became the #bestdayever. It is no secret: I LOVE, LOVE reality TV. Thus, when my friend introduced me to Duck Dynasty I was instantly hooked. Every time Si talks I am pretty much LOLing on the floor, and I seriously have the biggest crush on Willie (okay, that might be kinda weird). While the Robertson men and women are no doubt entertaining I have a bone to pick with most of the media out there. I spend a good amount of time browsing business publications, and entrepreneurs are always depicted in one of two ways: 1) The “pie in the sky” depiction highlights the one in a billion that made it big ala Mark Zuckerberg. This is the person that every entrepreneur hopes to be; the person that is disrupting the status quo, and making real changes to society. 2) The hopeless, burnt out entrepreneur is the second depiction. You know exactly the one I am talking about. The person that is Next week, I am going to NYC, and I CAN’T wait!! Who wouldn’t be excited about a fabulous weekend escape? Not going to lie, when I am in NYC, I really channel my YOLO mentality, and live it up. My credit card usually gets a good work out (can’t be responsible all the time!). Normally, I wait till the last minute to even think about packing, but I already started mentally packing. This is how excited I am! I think every career girl should be required to live in NYC for some time to learn some real life lessons. Really, Resumes…oh I know a topic that everyone loves. It seems like everyone is gearing up to conquer their career this Fall, so I figured it was the perfect time to do a video on resumes. Obviously, the first step to landing a job is having a killer resume. My alarm went off this morning, and series of expletives went through my head. Can’t I just sleep a little bit longer? If I am sleeping, then I am not forced to tackle my never-ending list of to dos. After snoozing about a 100 times, I begrudgingly got my lazy ass out of bed, and decided to conquer this lovely Monday. Mondays set the tone for the entire week, so I need to have a happy, productive, successful day. I swear the impending doom of a birthday is seriously causing me to question my entire life.
