What’s Up with Glam?

This week was AWESOME! I honestly didn’t even realize how awesome, until I sat down to write this post. Since last week’s edition, there has been so much progress!

I was running around like a crazy person all week…between juggling Glamtrepreneur meetings, keeping up with my PR clients, and blogging/social media, it was definitely exhausting. However, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I met with 4 different organizations to see if they would be interested in teaming up to put on a pop-up business plan writing workshop this summer. And, holy crap, all of them said, “yes”!!!!!! One of the non-profits I met with, wants to do a workshop at all of their summer camp sites (that could be 7 or 8 events!!). Once I have dates on the calendar, I will go into more detail. Even if some of these don’t happen, it is still validating to see people excited about my idea. I can’t explain how awesome that feels.

One thing that I can’t stress enough when starting your own business is be open to feedback, but know what your non-negotiables are too. It is seriously a lot like dating. You have to be open to change and compromise, but we all have things that we aren’t going to settle on. When I first presented my business plan writing workshop idea, the theme was “build your own shoe brand”. I thought it was a cute, engaging idea. What I didn’t realize until talking with people that actually work with kids, is that it is too conceptual. The students obviously weren’t going to walk away from the workshop with a shoe. Thus, we are changing the focus of the pop-ups to be more interactive. With the new ideas, the girls will actually leave the workshop with something they have made + an idea of how to write a business plan!

I feel like being open to that feedback took my idea to a whole new level.

Glamtrepreneur is a program for girls; that is the one thing I am not going to compromise on. Summer camps are usually co-ed, so for some programs it is just too hard to separate the boys and girls. Unfortunately, I have to say “no” to these situations.

My motto in life is something that I read in Sheryl Sandberg’s book: “done is better than perfect”. That is what I keep having to remind myself when it comes to Glamtrepreneur.

Originally with Glamtrepreneur, I wasn’t going to put it into the universe until I had a completed curriculum for the after school program. Looking back, that was a bad idea because it will take months to create. When I filed for my trademark, my lawyer said that I needed to be doing something with the name. That is when I decided it would be fun to do pop up events this summer. I honestly had nothing, but an idea when I started to reach out to people. These smaller events will be great practice, and will hopefully get people excited about the brand!

The funny thing about starting a business is that you obviously want people to get on-board with your ideas. However, when they do, you sorta have these major freakout moments as well. As soon as I had meeting where people expressed interest, all I could think was: Can I really pull this off? Have I gone in way over my head? What in the world makes you think that you can make this happen? I have no idea what I am doing, but I am going to try.

These, “What’s Up with Glam?”, posts are sorta turning into journal entries, but I am fine with that.
