HerRoom wasn’t Tomima Edmark’s first entrepreneurial endeavor. In fact, she is the inventor of TopsyTail, the wildly successful women’s hair accessory that made $150 million in revenue.
When Tomima decided to get into the lingerie business, she made it her mission to learn everything she possibly could. She learned from design teams, manufacturers and consumers. Now, she probably knows more than she wants to about the complex engineering that goes into designing lingerie and about the unique relationships our bodies have with the lingerie we wear. The biggest key to her success? She is a woman, so she wears the things she sells! This helps her to know what works and what doesn’t.
Today, HerRoom is the largest woman-owned lingerie store online. There have been ups and downs along the way, but here are a few things she has learned:
1. I wish I had understood the opportunity and taken the job I was offered in NYC after College. I should have lived in NYC right out of college. I was offered a job and I should have gone. There is no place like New York in the world – and I’m sure I would have enjoyed the cultural diversity and fast pace.
2. I wish I had known how special the time was with my older relatives. I should have spent more time with my extended family. I have so many questions. I wish I’d taken the time to have a cup of coffee with them and listened to all their stories.
3. I wish I would have been a little more social and a little less career driven. I wish I’d taken time to enjoy friends more as a young adult. There is no way to catch up on social times! You live and learn.
