Overcoming Writer’s Block

Maintaining a blog isn’t all fun and games. While I love doing it and consider it a hobby of mine, coming up with content is definitely hard work. I try to plan everything out, but there are still times when I sit down to write these posts and feel like I have nothing left to say.

Each month I spend a Saturday afternoon writing these career advice tip sheets. To be honest, this month I had a pretty fierce case of writer’s block; it wasn’t fun. However, I have a trick or two up my sleeve when it comes to situation’s like these. Here are a few easy ways to get inspired again:

  • Use your own life as inspiration

The easiest way for me to come up with content is to use what’s going on in my own life as inspiration. Whenever I can’t think of a topic to write about, I look to what I’m feeling or something that’s bothering me. Often, I look to issues I’ve just solved and been able to write posts about overcoming those issues. It’s my thought that if I’m having a problem, someone else might be having the same problem.

  • Be honest

Whenever I try to sound smarter than I am about a topic I run into issues, not just coming up with content on the topic, but with credibility as well. It’s much easier to write quantity and quality when you’re honest about what you know.

It’s also important to be honest when you feel unsure about a topic you’re working on. If I don’t know something, or feel worried about what I’m writing, I generally point out that feeling along the way. By being honest, the whole writing process becomes much easier.

  • Don’t force it

Sometimes the best cure for writer’s block is to stop writing and doing something else. When I’ve hit the wall and can’t think of a topic, I try not force it. Instead I’ll get coffee with a friend or walk my dog to clear my head. Then, when I get back, I can whip the blog posts out quickly and easily!
