Moving? 6 Ways to Find New Friends!

Got a new job in a great new city? Moving to a new place is exciting, but it can also be intimidating if you don’t know many other people there. We’ve come up with some different ways to help you connect with new people that share your similar interests so you can meet people and get to know your new city!

Join private Facebook groups- Is there a workout class you particularly enjoy? Or maybe a TV show or podcast? Odds are, there is a Facebook group full of others who have the same likes and dislikes as you! Check out these pages for potential events or meetups.

Join Meetup- Similar to Facebook, Meetup has so many different, unique categories. The trick here though is to not join or participate in too many. Rather, pick a couple and try to make a majority of the events and maybe eve try to land a leadership position.

Use an app- We use tons of apps everyday in every aspect of our lives, so why not use it to make new friends? There’s Bumble BFF and Tinder Social that are similar to their dating-app parents, but there’s lots of niche apps like ATLETO, that tries to bring together people interested in fitness for running groups, volleyball games and more. There’s even Meet My Dog, so pet owners can schedule meetups with all their pups!

Reach out to your network- Ask your friends, co-workers, anyone if they know someone living in your new town. Odds are, someone does! It makes it easier for you to reach out when you both have a mutual connection. Just don’t be shy to make the first move! Also, don’t be shy to reach out to new co-workers to help you get acquainted with your new social scene.

Make an effort- Think about how many times you go to social event and don’t know anyone, so you take out your phone and start scrolling through Instagram. Stop doing that! Instead, try to force yourself to talk to someone new and make a new friend.

Join a gym or boutique fitness studio- If you go to the same gym or studio regularly, you’ll start recognizing people. Once you find some familiar faces, don’t be shy about reaching out or sparking a conversation.

Trying these tips will hopefully help you branch out and meet new people as you start your new job in a new place. Focus on doing one of two of these things at a time and see how it works for you. We bet you’ll find a great group of friends in no time!
