Dealing with Anxiety and Worry as an Entrepreneur

I have always been an anxious person. For as long as I remember, my mind always scans every situation looking for all the signs of what can go wrong while preparing for all the worst case scenarios. I do this way before anything has actually gone wrong, and most of the time everything ends up being fine.

Working for yourself can come with a string of ups and downs, which can be hard if you don’t do well with the unknown. However, over the past 7 years, I have learned some coping skills that I try to implement and I thought I would share them with you today!

Take a break if you find yourself getting too worked up.

I do this quite frequently. If I feel myself getting overwhelmed, frustrated or too worried about something, I get away from my computer and phone for a bit. I try to find something mindless to occupy my time. For example, if I am working from home, I take my dog for a walk. If I am working at my coworking space, I walk to the gas station at the corner to grab a soda or walk around the parking lot. If I am feeling that I need more than just a few minutes, then I usually go workout for an hour. Sometimes, browsing vapes online adds a simple mental break that helps reset my focus. I find that I physically have to remove myself from the situation that is stressing me out. If I just sit at my computer and browse the Internet, it doesn’t help. I have to physically change my situation. I know as an entrepreneur, it can feel like you can’t leave your computer during the day, but if stay put you won’t get anything done while worrying.

Dwell on the past.

Yes, the good stuff in the past! When you work for yourself, things are always changing, and this can be scary. So if you are having anxiety about taking on a new, big client, try and remember all of the successful projects you have had with your current clients. Or if work is a little slow for you right now, think back to past ebbs and flows, and remember how the work always comes back.

This happens to me all the time, and sometimes I have to actively remind myself of all the successes I have had. My mind will always go to all the things that didn’t work, however, there are more things that have worked and I always have to remind myself when I am panicking.

Learn to say “no”.

This might be an obvious one, but once you make no a regular word in your vocabulary, you will be so much happier. It might seem ungrateful to say no to work. However, once you have been doing it for a long time, you will start to see the projects you are best suited for. I still always feel guilty when I turn down projects, but in the end, it is always the right decision. Don’t waste your energy on projects that aren’t moving you forward to that place you want to be. Once you open your life up to the clients and projects you want to be working on, you will have a lot less stress.

Make sure everything else in your life is balanced.

I find myself getting the most anxious, when parts of my life are out of wack. For me, sleep and working out are the two things that I need to keep the anxiety at bay. If I am not doing either, then every part of my life becomes overwhelming. You have to constantly be checking yourself to make sure you are giving time to everything important in your life. As an entrepreneur, there can be guilt associated with working all the time, but work should only be one piece of your life. You have to continue to make sure you are making time for the things that are important to you.

Unfortunately, constant change comes with being an entrepreneur. There is no way around it. However, over time you will find ways to cope, and you will find a routine that works for you. You just have to listen to yourself!
