August 2, 2013 by Contributor in Career, ETC. It’s the one thing that school doesn’t prepare you for. I should know, I’ve completed three post-secondary programs and not one has mentioned unemployment and what to do to remedy that. Or maybe they mentioned it while I was on Facebook in class…
To be honest, I’m not completely unemployed. I do have the same retail job that supported me throughout college, but at the same time it feels the same as unemployment. When you’re not doing what you’re meant to be doing, anything else feels soul sucking and depressing.
The hardest thing about my job search is staying positive.

Next up on Career Confidential, another awesome lady: Brandy Shea!
I have had the honor of working with Brandy professionally, which is always a treat because she is one of the most creative people I know. On top of that, she is also one of my closest friends.
If I were you, I would listen to what she has to say because she is an expert advice-giver; she knows what she is talking. I know from experience because

When I first starting looking for an internship back in December I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was looking for something in event planning and thought why not intern for one of the best wedding planners in town? That seemed to make the most sense, right?
After landing –what I thought was my dream internship–with a wedding planner I had a few months to think about it. I continued looking through my college’s career services website and slowly started to realize that I wanted to spend my summer doing something completely different. So I did.

July 29, 2013 by Rebekah in Career, ETC. Let me preface this post by saying, bear with me: this video is not going to win an Oscar for cinematography anytime soon.
Sometimes in life, you just have to tell your inner perfectionist to “shut the hell up”. Mostly, I wish there was a way I could get rid of the dark circles under my eyes! However, since this blog is all about being real, this is REALISTICALLY what I look like on a Friday afternoon after a long week.
I am so technologically incompetent: it took me the entire day to figure out iMovie and embed

WTF
As of today, I’ve been in New York for 2 months and 14 days. And I don’t know what the f*&% I was thinking.
I am almost broke, definitely unemployed, and sadly uninspired. “What happened to my life?” Is what I’ve been silently asking myself for the last two weeks. And maybe that’s the problem: Surrendering responsibility for the course of your life allows your life to take an irresponsible course. But that’s fake deep. Here’s what’s real…
I came to New York to escape. Escape from my typical life, in my typical town, where I could’ve stayed for

I don’t want to be biased on my own blog because technically I love all the posts, but I really really LOVE Career Confidential. Each week, I look forward to posting this column because all of these fabulous ladies have such invaluable advice and insight. I feel like in the last Career Confidential with Katie Amey (Part 1 and 2), I was so

I recently had to take a business management class in college–not by choice of course. When my professor started a lecture titled “interviewing”, I was really curious to see what tips she would give us.
Let’s just say it was nothing like what I expected. When discussing what should be worn to interviews, she suggested that women should be wearing suits and close-toed kitten heels (GASP!). Oh and heaven forbid that we forget those horrendous panty hose.
News flash: it’s the 21st century and nobody dresses that way for work anymore.

Maybe I am biased because Katie is my bff, but I thought her Career Confidential answers were filled with such valuable gems that I decided to break it up into two parts (check out part 1 here). I just couldn’t bring myself to edit it down and risk the chance of missing some real advice.
We are all trying to figure out how to balance all the things we love in life. In Katie’s Career Confidential: Part Deux,

I know it is cliché: I have been trying to start this blog for quite a while now. I always had a million excuses for why I couldn’t: “I am too busy with real work”, “I don’t have time”, “It probably won’t get anywhere”…blah, blah, blah. One day, about a month ago, I said, “fuck it, it is time to do what I really want”. Thus, NeonNotebook was born!
I spend a vast majority of my time on the Internet, and I have always felt like there wasn’t a one-stop destination for gen-y girls. There are fabulous fashion blogs, inspiring
