Career Confidential Part 2: Amber Link

The cool thing about Amber is that she landed the dream job right out of college. I would listen to what she has to say because she is definitely doing something right!

Working at a cool, hip start-up has sorta become a badge of honor. Everyone is looking for that next big company. She works Jobs2Careers, so she can give honest insight into what it is really like to work at a start-up.

1. On that note, do you think women can have it all? Both the baller career, and the happy family?

Honestly, I have no idea, but I ask myself this question a lot lately. I really want to have kids someday, and I don’t think being a stay-at-home mom would work for me personally (though it’s great that it does for some women!) so I plan to have a career. I don’t think that you can work 80 hours a week or travel constantly and still be home at 5:00 every day to make dinner, hang out with your kids, and go to all of their events, but I do think you can find a career that you love and are successful at that also fits with your family life. It may be harder than I can even imagine right now, but I do think finding that balance is possible!

2. Should you work for the money, or do what you love?

I personally need both to be happy. Right now I really love my job. However, if I wasn’t making any money I think I’d be a lot more stressed and a lot less happy, and I would probably feel undervalued. On the flip side though, I also don’t think that I could work only for the money. You spend the majority of your time at work, and if I was unhappy at work I think that that would translate to unhappiness in the rest of my life, and no amount of money is worth that!

3. What is the single most important factor of a job?

For me, it’s finding something that is challenging and unpredictable, so that I am never bored and always challenged. I also love the people I work with, I think that being able to make friends at work is extremely important! When I was looking for a job I made sure to ask plenty of questions about the company culture and meet the people working there so I could make sure I’d be a good fit.
