Career Confidential: Lauren Pruner

LaurenFull name?: Lauren Pruner

Position/Job title?: Account Exec., and PR Team Leader. Blogger at PRBlonde.

1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An architect

2. Fast-forward several years/decades. How did you land (or create) your current position?

I guess you could say I found a knack for building stories and brands, instead of homes. I enjoy writing, and wanted to be in a business built on relationships. PR is very representative of all of those factions. I have really learned to love this field.

3. Did you have to take on internships to get there? How important in general, do you think, are internships?

Yes, most PR pros start with a solid internship foundation before their careers takes off. The fundamentals of the business are something you never let go of, so it’s important you know the basics.

4. Tell us what a typical work day looks like for you. What is your job REALLY like, both the glamorous and not-so-glamorous parts?

Well, I am not a morning person, so I usually force myself to wake up early to workout and do some work. I have to take this time for myself, so my co-workers and clients are not met with someone who woke up on the wrong side of the bed! Some days can be pull your hair out crazy, others very manageable. You honestly never know what you are going to get – I love the unpredictability.

5. What is the biggest career mistake you’ve ever made?

Not knowing WHAT kind of PR I wanted to practice. It isn’t enough to just want to work in PR – that’s like saying I want to drive a car? Well, which one? High-performance, luxury, sports car etc.

6. What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to other career-minded women?

Be your own self-advocate. In a business that moves a million miles an hour, and when you carry the weight of clients on your shoulders – your personal career development can get lost in the shuffle.

7. Let’s talk about work/life balance. What does that mean to you? Is it important?

Girl! It’s what I preach! PRBlonde is exactly that – what we do outside of the office, and how we fill the time is what molds us into who we are. Believing in that balance is what PRBlonde is all about – so shop, cook, spend time with friends, watch reality TV, after all those guilty pleasures are what make “us” – us!

8. On that note, do you think women can have it all? Both the baller career, and the happy family?

One of the most “prophetic” things I have learned from my time as a blogger was at LuckyFABB – Drew Barrymore said it best, “Sometimes we can’t have it all. Sometimes things just fall through the cracks!” So true right? Sometimes we can’t have it all, but we can do our best and if we are dedicated to living a great life – we will.

9. What is the single most important factor of a job?

One of my favorite sayings is: “This is your life, do what you love and do it often. Life is short, live your dream and wear your passion.” The latter describes how I feel about my job, and that is most important to me.

10. If you married a millionaire husband and didn’t have to work, would you? (Be honest.)

I can’t imagine not having something to call my own. If what I wanted was to just be a mother, then make no mistake that is a full-time job. But I think we are our best selves when we are both selfish and selfless – if we are not good to ourselves – how can we be good for others?
