When I first thought about who I would ask to participate in Workin’ Girl Wardrobe, the first person I thought of was Nicole Seligman, from writes like a girl. If you haven’t ever checked out her blog, DO IT NOW! Every time she does an outfit post, I am insanely jealous because I could never pull off all the cute things she wears.
I swear, dressing for interviews is always a stressful situation. Since Nicole is currently on the hunt for that perfect job, I thought it would be awesome to see what her go-to outfit is. Below she offers stellar advice on everything from completer pieces to thrifting to surprising finds at Kohls.
What should every career girl have in her closet?
Every career girl needs a pair of black cropped pants, a power shoe, and a completer piece. For me, the completer piece is usually a cardigan, but most gals go for blazers. No matter what you’re wearing, a cardigan or blazer pulls everything together for a polished look.
List your favorite clothing brands for work clothes.
I constantly window shop online at J.Crew and J.Crew Factory, Gap, Old Navy, and Forever 21. Honestly, most of my work clothes have been thrifted! When I thrift, I look for brands like Loft, Banana Republic, Talbots, and Ann Taylor in addition to the previously listed brands.
What is your wardrobe missing?
Well, my wardrobe was missing blouses until a couple of weeks ago. I’ve really slacked on buying tops because I could wear dresses all year round. But! I had a gift card to Kohls, a store I wouldn’t have otherwise shopped, so I checked out the LC Lauren Conrad line. I found some fabulous, high quality blouses (one/two) for great prices. Moral of the story: shop places you wouldn’t expect!
Oh, but what am I missing now? A fitted black blazer. I’ve never found one that was perfectly fitted, so I’ve never bought one. Whoops?
What are your top three pieces for work?
Every career girl needs a pair of black cropped pants, a power shoe, and a completer piece. For me, the completer piece is usually a cardigan, but most gals go for blazers. No matter what you’re wearing, a cardigan or blazer pulls everything together for a polished look.
What is your ideal interview outfit?
My favorite interview outfit is my coral J.Crew Factory pencil skirt, my chartreuse tie-neck Forever 21 blouse, and my power shoe: a pair of glitter flats. I’m a ballerina flat girl for life, so I wear what makes me most confident.
