I found yoga 3 years ago, and my life changed in a way I never knew it could. I decided that while I was still young (and unemployed), I would become an yoga instruction. I mean, why not, right? Ever since I started the training, I have fallen more and more in love with my practice. I have never felt so passionate about anything in my life.
After going to school for four years with a minimal interest in what I was studying, I often wondered what I was going to do. What was I passionate about? What was I going to do when I graduated? It was draining. When I signed up to do an intense 8-week (200 hour) yoga training, I was nervous. What if I started and ended up hating yoga, sort of like how my major made me want to stop reading about politics all together (government major, heyyyy unemployment!) But thankfully the opposite happened, I found my calling!
I crave the physical activity everyday; I want to read everything there is about yoga, the history, philosophy, and stories. I never knew I had this fire in me. I look forward to my 8-hour sessions on Saturday’s, then curling up at home after relishing in the positive vibes and encouragement. I feel warm, I feel like I know what I want and I’m not scared about my future.
I understand that being passionate about what you do is a privilege, but if you can take the time to discover something you love, and feel the curiosity grow inside you, I encourage you to explore it. It is so important that you do something you love, even if you do it outside of work. It gives you meaning, opens you world, and introduces you to people who understand you like you wouldn’t believe. I cannot wait to begin my career as a yoga instructor, it will take time and patience, but knowing that I can practice what I love everyday brings a sense of security.
I truly believe if you take the time to work on something you love you can eventually do what you love for life. Sure, I plan on working part-time jobs in the meantime, trying to make ends meet. But it’s okay, you have to start somewhere, it’s all part of your journey.
