Next week, I am going to NYC, and I CAN’T wait!! Who wouldn’t be excited about a fabulous weekend escape? Not going to lie, when I am in NYC, I really channel my YOLO mentality, and live it up. My credit card usually gets a good work out (can’t be responsible all the time!).
Normally, I wait till the last minute to even think about packing, but I already started mentally packing. This is how excited I am!
I think every career girl should be required to live in NYC for some time to learn some real life lessons. Really, you can gain so many invaluable tidbits from getting your ass kicked by the city of dreams:
1) You learn how to hustle. If you want something, you don’t wait for someone to hand it to you. You go out and get it, no matter how impossible it seems.
2) You know that no doesn’t really mean no. New Yorkers don’t really understand the meaning of no; it is a foreign concept. If one door is slammed in your face, you quickly learn to start knocking on other doors.
3) You work with a sense of urgency. Not to be a hater, but watching people work in Austin, is sorta like watching paint dry. New Yorkers conquer all projects—big or small—with a sense of urgency. It is simple: this is how you get things done!
4) You understand the power of knowing people. Even if you don’t know everyone in your industry personally, you know of them. To advance in any job, it is more about whom you know, rather than what you know. Anyone who tells you differently is probably not that successful.
5) You know how to move quickly in heels. When living in NYC, you learn how to maneuver unusual situations in 6-inch stilettos. Subways stairs, pouring rain, speeding cabs…no worries.
6) You know how to be prepared for the whole day. When you live in NYC, each morning, you have to efficiently pack for the whole day. There is none of this wasting time by running how to change.
7) You develop very thick skin. New Yorkers understand how to handle rejection and hardships unlike anyone else. If you have a breakdown every time something goes wrong, you will be living in a constant state of anxiety. Instead, you learn to just deal.
8) You learn to pay attention to details. When I was interning, I learned to pay attention to every small detail, mostly because I was terrified of getting yelled at. Looking back, it is something I appreciate now. Everything should be done correctly.
When you are young, why not get a PhD from the school of hard knocks? If you ever dreamed of moving to NYC, there is no better time… If you don’t just do it, you will always regret it.
