What I Wear To Work…

I recently had to take aMallorie1 business management class in college–not by choice of course. When my professor started a lecture titled “interviewing”, I was really curious to see what tips she would give us.

Let’s just say it was nothing like what I expected. When discussing what should be worn to interviews, she suggested that women should be wearing suits and close-toed kitten heels (GASP!).  Oh and heaven forbid that we forget those horrendous panty hose.

News flash: it’s the 21st century and nobody dresses that way for work anymore.

Now that I have been interning for a while, I truly believe that there are essential pieces for every workin’ girl.

First every girl should own a shift dress with a synched waste. The silhouette is flattering on every body type, I promise. I was recently in Madewell with one of my best friends and we both bought the red dress you see to the right. She is 5’8 and I am 5’4 with totally different body types, yet the dress fit both of us like a glove. These easy pieces are what you want in your wardrobe. Even better, this type of dress comes in so many different colors and fabrics.Mallorie2

Accessorizing is the key to mixing up your workplace wardrobe. With this dress, in particular, you can leave it as is, add a cute skinny belt, or my personal favorite a statement necklace that adds an extra pop of color.

Unless you are interviewing for a high profile, corporate job, I would recommend staying away from blacks, blues, and grays. Color is essential in my wardrobe! Even though we have big girl jobs, we don’t have to date ourselves with drab clothes.

That’s why I love these scrunched wasted skirts from J.Crew; they are perfect for a casual day at the office. They are lightweight and made out of a linen material, but still create a sophisticated look.

I usually pair them with a dressier top, but a blue jean button down would also work depending on the office setting.

One of life’s biggest truths: nothing can brighten your day like a good outfit. I swear. That is why I like working in PR because I don’t get stressed out what to wear to work. My fashion motto is pick a few staple pieces and buy them in every color. It makes life easier that way!.

Sometimes all it takes is a great dress, skirt, or necklace to get you through that hard day at work.
