If you’re like me, you spend hours scrolling through pictures of food and always read menus before checking out a new restaurant. Odds are, you probably like taking pictures of all your fun eats as well. Here’s a guide with some photography and social media tips so you can give your love of food a platform to grow!
→ USE NATURAL LIGHT
It is crazy how much better your photos look when you take them outside. Photos in natural light tend to look much sharper and more dynamic than those taken in dark restaurants. Plus, the better the lighting, the less filters and edits you’ll need to use. I mean, what’s worse than a heavy Valencia filter on that crazy milkshake you want to post?

→ FILL THE (SQUARE) FRAME
Many people forget when taking photos that Instagram shots are all squares. Keep this in mind when taking photos so you don’t end up cutting out part of your food! Also, don’t be afraid to actually fill the frame and get up-close-and-personal with your meal.

→ CONSIDER YOUR PHOTOS “LIFESPAN”
Taking great quality photos is awesome, but not if nobody can see them. One way to attract new users to follow your account is by using hashtags. However, generic hashtags like “foodporn” or “food” will die quickly since many people will use those. Get specific, like “atxeats” or “austinfoodie” to have a longer hashtag lifespan so more users can see your pictures!

→ INTERACT WITH OTHER ACCOUNTS
It may seem weird to forge new friendships online, but don’t be afraid to comment on other account’s posts! This will increase your exposure. Go ahead and comment on some major accounts, but also comment on other newer accounts. Odds are they will check your profile and follow your account to keep up with your posts.

→ MIX UP YOUR CONTENT
While it is easy to post tons of pictures of desserts and junk food since those tend to garner lots of likes, mix up the photos on your account. People will get bored if they keep seeing the same food from different angles over and over. Variety will keep your followers entertained!

→ THINK ABOUT TIMING
Posting a picture at 9PM on a Friday night probably won’t be conducive to getting a ton of likes. Think about times people will have a break in their day and check their social media, like during a lunch break or evening commute. When many people are checking social media, your chances of many likes, comments and follows goes way up.

→ GET OUT AND EXPLORE
This may sound silly, but having a food Instagram or blog is supposed to be fun! Use it as an excuse to try that super trendy new restaurant or try an interesting recipe. Have fun with it and don’t take it too seriously.
