What is the biggest career mistake you’ve ever made? Waiting till I was “ready”— It turns out there’s never a good time to dive off the deep end- you just gotta do it and sink or swim. Whatever mistakes you make, you learn from them. So don’t be afraid to just do it.
What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to other career-mindedwomen? Don’t let anyone tell you- “you CAN’T”— the only one who can stop you is you!
Let’s talk about work/life balance. What does that mean to you? Is it important? This is SO IMPORTANT – but something I still seriously struggle with. I am workaholic who always feels guilty if I’m not grinding. However, I’ve learned the hard way, by running myself into the ground, that it’s better to have QUALITY work than QUANTITY. The soul can’t deliver its best when it’s exhausted and uninspired. I always try to find time between meetings, emails and gigs to make sure I am taking care of my mind and body. I go for a run in the park and then meditate under a tree, and I make sure to leave my phone behind so I can fully focus on soul nourishment.
Do you have any career role models? Who are they? I’m inspired by a lot of artists, but Dolly Parton is one of the most impressive women in the business. I love how she has taken her talents and done it ALL! I hope to one day be as accomplished and also have the longevity of her career.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received – career-related or otherwise? “Go with your gut.” It’s funny how much pain you can avoid when you trust your instincts. Even though I love human beings, not all of them are going to be good for you or business. Trust your gut when you get those red flags— save yourself from the ol “hindsight’s 20/20.”
Should you work for the money, or do what you love? The way I see it time is the most valuable thing we have. If we are just working for money and doing something that makes us miserable, then what’s the point? A person cannot be the best to their family, their friends and their selves if the majority of their time is spent in an environment toxic to their soul. I’ve always lived for passion which I find in my music and even when I’m struggling, it still feels right because I know it’s what I’m meant to do.
