SXSW, while being one of the most fun events of the year, can also be one of the most exhausting. If you’re in need of a reprieve from all the craziness, check out one of these spots to breakaway.
Texas State Capitol Tour– Considered a National Historic Landmark, the Texas State Capitol is one of the tallest state capitols (even taller than the United States Capitol!). Capitol tours are given 7 days a week and are free to anyone interested. Tours begin every 30-45 minutes and last 30 minutes, so it’s a great way to squeeze in a bit of history while you’re here.
Blanton Museum– This art museum, located on The University of Texas at Austin’s campus, has one of the largest collections of are in Central Texas. The Blanton’s permanent collections boasts everything from class European pieces to modern American works. They also constantly rotate exhibitions. For instance, The Blanton will be showing Nina Katchadourian: Curiouser, a look at a Brooklyn-based artist midway through her career, beginning Monday March 12.
UMLAUF Scultpure Garden– This beautiful outdoor garden features the work of American sculptor Charles Umlauf. Located near Zilker Park, this lush garden features over 150 of Umlauf’s creations, as well as temporary exhibits from other artists. Although its closed on Mondays, the garden is open every other day until 4 PM.
The Bullock Texas State History Museum – Named after Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock, this museum tells the “Story of Texas.” The museum celebrates all the things the Lonestar State has to offer through exhibitions, films, artist series and more. Right now, visitors can check out an installation of The Austin City Limits Theatre.
Standup Paddle Boarding– Looking for something a bit more physical? Enjoy the beautiful water and take an afternoon to paddle board along Lady Bird Lake. If sitting down is more your thing, kayaks and canoes are also available for rental. Rentals are available daily from 9AM-6PM.
Try some food trucks- Austin is famous for its food scene, and a large part of that is due to the wide array of food trucks available across town. Although there are tons of delicious options, some of the most noteworthy include la barbecue, Hey! You Gonna Eat or What? and Burro Cheese Kitchen.
So, if you need a respite from the craziness of SXSW, try one of these activities to take a break, recharge your batteries and get to know the city of Austin a little better.
