Position / Job title?: Founder of Imperfect Concepts and ICB Consults
1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Don’t laugh but I wanted to be corporate merger lawyer in a powersuit living in New York City by Central Park on the upper east side.
2. Fast-forward several years/decades. How did you land (or create) your current position?
No, far from it. I am doing far from it. I am educating women on how to get their start in business and much more.
3. Did you have to take on internships to get there? How important in general, do you think, are internships?
Yes, I have several internships in my career. They each taught me different things. Only two were actually paid and they were stipends that you got at the very end.
4. Tell us what a typical work day looks like for you. What is your job REALLY like, both the glamorous and not-so-glamorous parts?
Wake up 8:30, Workout 9:30, Breakfast 10, Emails + Consultations 11am -5pm Lunch somewhere between there, Dinner 7pm, Reading or Ted Talks 9pm -11pm
5. What is the biggest career mistake you’ve ever made?
Letting others opinions, thoughts and feelings define my business moves.
6. What is the single most important piece of advice you would give to other career-minded women?
Do what makes you happy now. Don’t put off your happiness to appease someone else that might not be in your life a week from now.
7. Let’s talk about work/life balance. What does that mean to you? Is it important?
It means me being happy with my decisions, my life and more. Before I would compromise so much to make others happy or what others said I was suppose to do because I ran a business. No matter what I have two days off a week. They are not usually Saturday or Sunday. It means me doing what makes me happy to keep my mind, body and soul as one.
8. On that note, do you think women can have it all? Both the baller career, and the happy family?
Yes, you just have to know one day you will not be the greatest at them all. My mentor Lisa Price told me that. There will be days you are a great boss and mom, but not a great friend. You have to be okay with that. You can have it all. Just know what works for you to have it all.
9. If you could look into a crystal ball and see 20 years into your future, what would you want to see?
My super hot, brilliant and witty husband (laughs) and beautiful kids in Sydney surfing on holiday break.
10. Do you have any career role models? Who are they?
Lisa Price of Carol’s Daughter. She is very honest, brilliant and giving of her lessons in life and business.
11. What is the best piece of advice that you have ever received – career-related or otherwise?
Don’t apologize for what makes you happy.
12. Parents love to say, “just wait ’til you have to face the real world…” When you were in college or high school, what did you think the “real world” looked like? What is the difference between what you thought and reality?
I thought the real world was like Candy Land or something. Nothing like what I live now. Paying $600 in student loan debt a month, constant emails, wanting vacations, wanting to buy Jimmy Choo’s and much more. Side Note, I want to be debt free no later than Fall 2016 so that is why I pay so much in Student loan debt. The difference is I thought I would graduate with an amazing job, be married and kids with life being like a fairy tale. Currently single but I do love my career path.
13. Should you work for the money, or do what you love?
I personally get to do what I love and get paid for it. Money came after I let go of chasing it. Too many times people are chasing money vs focusing on what matters to them. If you do what you love the money you make will be exactly what you need at that moment to succeed.
14. How important is money to you when considering a job?
Its not a factor in my life right now. I charge what I believe my worth is.
15. What is the single most important factor of a job?
It makes you happy.
16. If you married a millionaire husband and didn’t have to work, would you? (Be honest.)
Yes, if he had a charity that I could run and we had kids to raise. I couldn’t just sit still. So us having little ones would be a factor in me staying at home vs having a nanny.
