I sorta hate the word, “plus size”, not because I am oblivious to the fact that I am considered plus size, but it has such a negative connotation. And there really aren’t any better synonyms. Curvy? Uh, no thanks, that doesn’t sound better. So, let’s just say this post is for those of us that aren’t a size 2.
If you haven’t noticed from my excessive amounts of “What I Wore” posts lately, I am on a fashion rampage. I might be feeling a wee bit nostalgic for my days at Vogue and People’s Revolution. I miss the sense of urgency and excitement that one can only find in the fashion industry.
Anyways, the point is: fashion should be fun, and a great outfit can be a major pick me up.
I have pretty much always been a size 14/16 , and that has never (unfortunately, for my credit cards) deterred my love of shopping. As my fellow blogger, Nicole, mentioned in this post, fashion/shopping can be detrimental to your self esteem, if you let it be. Instead, learn to have fun with it:
1) Don’t be afraid of fashion.
I have never met a tribal print, shiny lame’ legging or leather piece, that I haven’t fallen in love with. Fashion should always be something fun, and you should experiment with your style. Just because you aren’t a Victoria’s Secret model, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to rock the latest trends. Don’t let any dumb “fashion rules” (who even made those stupid things up?!?), stop you from wearing what you want.
2) Confidence is your best accessory.
The lovely and timeless Diane Von Furstenberg said it best: “Attitude is everything.”
When it comes to clothes, you can pull off anything as long as you are confident about it. If you think you look terrible in something, then your body language/attitude is probably reflecting that. If you just own it, I promise it will look good! Life is more fun if the world is your runway.
3) Size is just a number.
I hate to break it to you, but just because you can squeeze into a size 10, doesn’t mean you should. If you are wearing clothes that are too small, it will only make you look bigger. While mentally you might feel better because you can get those jeans zipped, it is never a cute look when your rolls are hanging out all over the place. If you get clothes that actually fit, you will always look smaller.
4) Find clothes that elongate.
My ultimate truth: the higher the heel, the closer to God. You can never be too tall. Covering up in black, isn’t the only way to look slimmer. Find pieces that make you look longer: vertical lines, skinny jeans and heels!
