Healthy Ways to Have Fun This Weekend!

This is why Facebook is a wonderful thing: I noticed that my former roommate, Alix Altit, decided to become a personal trainer!  As part of that, she started a YouTube channel with health and fitness videos. The other day, she posted a video with a recipe for a healthy fig martini (check it out below!), and thought it would make a great pre-weekend post.

All week I have been looking forward to this weekend because my best friend is coming in town, and we are going to have a fabulous night out. Every once in a while you just need to let loose, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to throw your health and fitness routine out the window. Instead, Alix shares some tips to find a balance:

1. Don’t mix any drinks with soda, regular or diet. Especially not diet!! And try to stay away from juices that are full of sugar. Red bull or any energy drink is a definite no. Club soda, water, or unsweetened tea are you’re best bet for mixers. Try getting a drink that’s mixed with fresh fruit instead. Or cucumber and mint.

2. Order light instead of dark liquor and try to stay away from most flavored liquor because of the added sugar, such as flavored rum and vodka.

3. Salads are great because of all of the vegetables you’re getting, but the dressing is where things start to get tricky. Usually dressings are full of calories, fat, and sugars. So ask for your dressing on the side so you can control how much you use or just get oil and vinegar. That’s what I do!

4. You don’t have to finish everything on your plate! And don’t eat too quickly either. Most portions in restaurants are huge, so splitting a meal is not a bad idea either.
